Q: Why the following reaction is known as red-ox reaction? Why it is not only known as either reduction or oxidation reaction?
FeO + CO----------> Fe + CO2
FeO + CO----------> Fe + CO2
Ans: Because oxidation and
reduction reactions occur simultaneously in any reaction, e.g. in the above
reaction, Fe is reduced from Fe2+ to Fe0 and C is
oxidized from C2+ to C4+ while the oxidation number of
oxygen is -2 on both the sides.
